TECHNICAL READINESS LEVEL:
TBC (Thermal Barrier Coating) ceramic coatings limit the heating of metal engine components, ensuring that metal parts do not work outside their mechanical stability range. Optimizing the nature of the coatings as engine designs evolve to run on SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) or Hydrogen.
Turbine component which are exposed to elevated temperature are usually made of temperature-resistant nickel or cobalt based superalloy materials. Thermal barrier coating are deposited on metal superalloy materials to provide reduced thermal conductivity, which with cooling of the underlying component, reduce the thermal impact of the engine environment on the component material which would otherwise lead to premature failure.
