Technical Readiness Level:
Solar control is a mature glazing functionality in the building and automotive markets. It consists in filtering the solar light that goes through a glazing by letting the visible light in but blocking the infrareds, in order to reduce the heat intake of a building or vehicle.
The solar control function is brought to the aircraft windshield by thin film multi-layer coatings deposited by magnetron sputtering process leveraging Saint-Gobain industrial knowledge producing every year several milions of square m² solar control glass for building and automotive applications.
Key features
The reinforced insulation of the glazing provided by the solar control function reduce the power of Air Conditioning (AC) systems and thus decrease the energy:
- Consumption of airplanes.
- Increased comfort with the cockpit.
