Sensing textile

Technical Readiness Level:

TRL 4

Two nondestructive monitoring methods have been developed to track changes in the composite material: conductive yarns (strain, cracks, humidity) and optical fiber (strain, temperature). Conductive yarn could be incorporated directly in the glass veil production, and optial fiber could be attached to reinforcement textile with embroidery or crochet machines. Both technologies allow to have a continuous surface monitoring on the health of the structure and allow to make preventive maintenance. The defection could also be localised, which allow to reduce the repair cost. For the optical fiber, the design of the patterns could also be customized to measure in different directions . SG Adfors is looking for study case to develop such technology.
