Technical Readiness Level:
In Space and Aviation industry, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Composites (CRFP) are becoming a very popular choice to replace metals (alluminium mainly) to build tanks for propellants (liquid oxygent or liquid hydrogen), an support the sustainability global trend.
Being softer than metals, these material represent a challenge for sealing especially when dealing with extremely small Hydrogen molecules making valve tightness particularly hard to achieve. In addition extremely low temperature to relatively high temperature requires high sealing accommodation, while materials are becoming brittle.
RACO® Spring-Energized Seals are used in extreme face sealing conditions, including cryogenic fluids and high vacuum. This sealing solution features a Fluoroloy® jacket energized by a corrosion resistant, heavy duty/high load RACO® spring that provides a very high spring force along the sealing lip.
Omniseal Solutions has been testing their solutions in co-development with some key customers (like ArianeGroup and Isar Aerospace). First flight parts will be manufactured in 2023.
Key features:
- Overall weight is lower than a metal seal
- Leakage requirement 10-3 sccs
- Compact design possible with simplified assembly and maintenance.
