HKO DEFENSOR Flex® H2-tank shell

Technical Readiness Level:

TRL 5

In the future, Hydrogen will be the new jet fuel with some new challenges to solve, especially when it comes to safety. Pressure tanks have to be thermally protected to allow pressure relief in case of fire. DEFENSOR-Flex® H2-tank shell prototypes (H2 gas storage tank) aim at stopping/reducing the propagation of fire to avoid tank burst by

• Decreasing the rise of temperature

• Protecting the GFRP/CFRP pressure tank from direct flame

Key features:

DEFENSOR-Flex® H2-tank shell consist of insulating glass fiber mats protecting the tank against fire and high temperature.

Prototype testings show that DEFENSOR-Flex® mat covering the tank effectively insulates it from a temperature of 1000°C outside the fire barrier to 600°C outside the covered tank to 120°C inside the covered tank.
