3D knitted composites for complex geometry

Technical Readiness Level:

TRL 7

The 3D knitting technology will benefit any composite manufacturer that wishes to improve quality and decrease cost by automating their labor intensive lay-up process. 3D Knitting is a breakthrough technology to replace manual lay-up process bringing speed, quality and economic benefits to the overall production.

The 3D knitting process is particulary well suited to achieve complexe composite shapes without stiching such as spinner. The 3D knitting process of SJDI allows for the manufacturing of TP matrix composite (Glass fiber/PolyCarbonate (PC) or Carbonfiber/PC with many benefit in terms of sustainability .

Key features:

With RT2I  3D knitting technology the composite part is made in one piece regardless the geometry complexity. RT2I offers speed, efficiency and reproducibility:

  • RT2i Process is about 10 times more efficient than traditional manual lay-up.
  • The RT2I automated process is highly reproducible, and guarantee consistent pattern and fiber/matrix ratio.
  • The process has nearly zero waste material.
  • The process is only using dry fiber which elminate the need  for energivor cold temperature storage and specific logistic condition.
